SmugMug > keywords > tropo > Some Tropo soldiers.  What their equipment did was shoot communications up into the ionosphere and bounce it back to earth to be caught by another receiver many miles away.  It was pure magic in 1969 and I'm sure some form of it is still around today.

Their rigs were fun to hang around in the summer.  They required a 35K generator to keep the air conditioning running.  The Tropo gear needed to be kept cool.
